Phophonyane Falls Lodge & Nature Reserve

Phophonyane Falls Lodge is situated in the northwest of Swaziland. The lodge is easily accessible from the MR1 route passing north-south between Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal and is a popular stop for self-drive travellers.

The lodge also serves as a usual stop-over en route to Mozambique, especially for those following the scenic route via Barbeton and Bulembu.

FROM JOHANNESBURG, GAUTENG Head towards Witbank on the N12 which will connect you to N4. Pass Witbank and Middleburg, and take the R33 turn-off towards Carolina. On exiting Carolina stay with the R33 which turns right straight after the railway line. 41km further on turn left at the T-junction towards Warburton on the N17. This road leads directly to the Oshoek border post. Continue on this road (MR3) for approximately 8 kms, before you will turn left onto the MR1 which leads to Piggs Peak. Once you've taken this turn-off, travel for approximately 50 km before you reach Piggs Peak. Travel straight through Piggs Peak for approximately 14km further, before you will reach Phophonyane Falls Lodge sign/turn-off towards your left and drive for about 4.4 km on a dirt road. It is advisable to arrive before dark i.e 5.30pm because the road can get tricky in the dark.

FROM DURBAN, KWA-ZULU NATAL Take the N2 North towards Pongola. 20 Kilometres before Pongola, turn right towards the Golela border post. Follow the road into Swaziland towards Big Bend (MR8). Travel through Big Bend for approximately 75 kms and you will reach a T-junction. Turn left onto the MR3 towards Manzini. Continue straight through Manzini, and continue following the MR3, which leads towards the Oshoek border post. Approximately 14 kms further on, turn onto the MR1 to Piggs Peak. Travel straight through Piggs Peak for approximately 14 km further, and you will reach the Phophonyane Falls Lodge sign / turn-off towards your left, drive for 4.4 km on a dirt road. FROM NELSPRUIT, MPUMALANGA From Nelspruit, follow the N4 in an easterly direction. Take the R570 turn-off right after Malelane. This road leads directly to Jeppes Reef border post. Follow MR1 road towards Pigg's Peak for approximately 30 km. Pass the Peak Fine Craft Centre and Orion Hotel entrance. Drive for about 1km then you will see the sign / turn-off to Phophonyane Falls Lodge on your right., drive for 3 km on a dirt road. It is advisable to arrive before darki.e 5.30 pm because the road can get tricky in the dark.
