Caring for destination

This tour provider has taken action to address one or more issues (whether environmental, social or cultural) which will contribute positively to the long term viability of the destination and hence their site displays a Caring for the destination rating.

Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:

Swazi Trails has focused on operating this quad trail in an environmentally sustainable manner.

Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:

Being very conscious of the negative inpacts that poorly controlled quad and trail bike riding has on the environment Swazi Trails has purposefully followed a low impact approach. Participants in this actiovity need not feel guilty that their actions are in any way environmentally unfriendly, as the advent of this trail in Ezulwini has done a lot to improve the natural value of a previously degraded area.

The company purposefully searched for a suitable area that could be carefully managed for sustainable quad trail riding. The discovery of an old tin mining site close to the Royal Swazi Sun hotel in Ezulwini has turned out to be the perfect location.

This natural area was previously highly impacted by the early 19th century mining, which caused both ersion and the infestation of alien vegetation. So thick were the weeds that the area was almost totally inaccessible. In laying out the trail, the development  has opened up this quiet and potential green area and allowed for alien weed control measures to be implemented. Block by block, alien vegetation has been systematically cleared allowing indigenous vegetation to flourish. These actions have dramatically improved the stream flow in the area and improved the quality of water available for both neighbouring communities and livestock.

Swazi Trails trained local Swazi guides to manage and lead the quad trail operation and the regular annual weed elimination exercises have provided a benefitial source of income for unskilled labour.

Detailed bird lists have recently been generated of all bird sightings in the area and during the early hours of the day, the trails themselves have become an idfeal walking route for birders from the surrounding hotels.

Swazi Trails has committed itself to directing 10% of its annual trail turnover to the improvement of the immediate environment in and around the quad trail area on an ongoing basis.
