Caring for destination
Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:
The main areas of focus are development of local skills and creation of employment opportunities.
Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:
Swazi Trails has pioneered the concept of local step-on guides in Swaziland. Historically, Swaziland has been traversed by guides from neighbouring South Africa, which has left the local guiding industry severely under-developed. In early 2001, Swazi Trails began actively training and promoting the availability of local guides as an alternative to foreign guides.
Today, a number of South African and international tour operators regularly make use of Swazi guides for their scheduled itineraries, the most committed of these being French operator Akilanga.
Many independent travellers have also now begun to make use of a local guide to assist them in getting the most out of their time in Swaziland.
Swazi Trails is proud to be associated with previous employee Mandla Masuku who as an early product of efforts to simulate guide supply services has now established his own business in this sphere. Swazi Trails regularly sub-contract guides from this enterprise. Masuku was the overall winner of the 2008 Technoserve Tourism Business Plan competition.
The pick-up spot is determined at the time of booking. Please add this as a "special request" to your booking.
It is only necessary to book a single person for the guide, as the guide hire rate is the same regardless of whether guiding for one person or for a coach load of 40 persons. If you need two or more guides on two or more separate vehicles, first book one, then when on your "My booking" page add another guide service for the same day to your existing booking reference number.
