Caring for destination
Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:
Swazi Trails employ only local Swazi guides and this particular tour is specifically aimed to provide material benefit to communities visited.
Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:
All Swazi Trails tour guides are local and indigenous Swaziland residents, many of whom are drawn from the communities that are visited on tours like this. This is a great value to visitors who are granted a much more intimate and behind-the-scenes experience whilst exploring Swazi culture. It is also of great value to the communities and individual homesteads that are visited, as social needs can be more easily identified and attended to.
On the Taste of Swaziland tour a small thank you gift is provided to homesteads that are visited. After consultation between Swazi Trails guides and management it was decided that monetary contributions were problematic, particularly in certain homesteads where the money was not utlised wisely, and squandered on alcohol or cigarettes. Hence the company policy is now to deliver small luxuries like sugar, tea, candles or soap to impoverished homesteads. This process of interaction has been greatly improved by the simple implementation of responsible tourism principles.
