Caring for destination

This tour provider has taken action to address one or more issues (whether environmental, social or cultural) which will contribute positively to the long term viability of the destination and hence their site displays a Caring for the destination rating.

Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:

Swazi Trails focuses on skills development and employment creation in the rural community of Mphaphati which is on the banks of the Great Usutu River, alongside the white-water section.

Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:

All Swazi Trails rafting guides originate from the Mphaphati community, having been hand-picked and intensively trained over a period of 8 years.

For each person that participates in a white water rafting trip, Swazi Trails voluntarily donates ZAR 10.00 to the local community. In early 2003 this had amounted to ZAR 45,000.00, which has since been used for the purchase of school text books, for scholarships in educating needy pupils and for the construction of a school administration office building.

The pool of funds for assisting this community has been allowed to slowly increase since then and in 2008 stood at over ZAR 65 000.00. Funds were used for another large community project during the 2009 year.

Swazi Trails would like to use this funding to leverage additional donor funds so as to maximise the value of tourism impact in this very disadvantaged community.  At present there are no economic enterprises or commercial farming at Mphaphati and almost all young adults are migrant workers in the main cities of Mbabane, Manzini and Matsapha.  With guidance from the community Swazi Trails would like to explore the potential for revenue-earning activities within the community area, such that families are not split and that the community itself benefits from the presence of skilled and motivated individuals.
