Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:
Swazi Trails is committed to operating this quad trail to the highest standards of environmental sensitivity.
Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:
Swazi Trails is very conscious of the negative inpacts that uncontrolled quad and trail bike riding has on the environment. For this reason the company purposefully sought out a suitable area that could be intensively managed for sustainable trail riding. An old abandoned tin mine area adjacent to the Royal Swazi Sun hotel in Ezulwini was discovered to be the ideal location.
The area was found to be highly degraded and infested with alien vegetation such that it was almost totally inaccessible. In creating the trail, the operation has opened up this area and allowed for alien weed control measures to be implemented. Blocks of vegetation have been cleared in a systematic manner allowing indigenous vegetation to flourish. Careful effect has also been made to open up the stream and put erosion control mesaures in place.
Swazi Trails has trained local Swazi guides to lead and manage the quad trail operation and the annual weed elimination exercises have provided a valuable source of income for unskilled labour.
Bird lists have been generated of all sightings in the area and the trails themselves have become a perfect walking route for early-morning birders from the surrounding area.
