This small community-run lodge, situated high up on the Lubombo Mountain range in Swaziland, is experiential tourism at its best. Shewula Mountain Camp is not just a place to stay, but a place to really absorb and understand Swazi culture and its predominantly rural lifestyle.
Shewula Mountain Camp offers both family and private rooms, all locally built using the skills of local builders, and materials such as stone and thatch from surrounding areas. The lodge provides three healthy meals a day, featuring mostly locally grown and produced food.

Shewula is situated in north-east Swaziland, close to the Mozambique border. The Shewula Nature Reserve is a member of the Lubombo Conservancy along with Hlane, Mlawula, Mbuluzi, Nkalashane SISA ranch and IYSIS ranch and the camp is situated on a cliff-top overlooking this vast natural area. For travellers heading to or from Mozambique or the Kruger National Park, Shewula Mountain Camp is a great overnight stop. The camp is accessible by 2-wheel drive vehicles throughout the year.

For backpackers access is possible by local bus to Simunye and then from there by minibus to Shewula Camp. The road through Shewula is well sign-posted, so relax enjoy the friendly waves from the people of Shewula.

FROM JOHANNESBURG, GAUTENG TO SHEWULA - Head towards Witbank on the N12 or N4. Pass Witbank and Middleburg, and take the R33 turn-off towards Carolina. On exiting Carolina stay with the R33 which turns right straight after the railway line. 41km further on turn left at the T-junction towards Warburton on the N17. This road leads directly to the Oshoek/Ngwenya border post. Continue on this road (MR3) which leads directly to Mbabane. Continue on the MR3 and travel for approximately 35 kms to reach Manzini. Travel straight through Manzini, do not take any turn-off's, this road (MR3) leads straight towards Simunye/Hlane. As you exit Manzini, you have approximately 75 km before you will reach Simunye. Travel straight through Simunye towards the Lomahasha borderpost. The Shewula turnoff is 10km south of the Lomahasha/Namaacha border post with Mozambique. From the turn-off the camp is a gentle 30min drive through an undulating rural landscape.
FROM DURBAN, KWA-ZULU NATAL TO SHEWULA - Take the N2 North towards Pongola. 20 Kilometres before Pongola, turn right towards the Golela border post. Follow the MR8 into Swaziland towards Big Bend. Shortly after Big Bend, turn right on the MR16 towards Siteki. Travel on this road until you reach a T-junction where you will turn left onto the MR7 for a short while which will bring you to another t-junction. Turn right onto the MR3 towards Hlane. Travel for approximately 30 kms before you will reach Simunye Sugar Estate. Travel straight past towards the Lomahasha/Namaacha border post. The Shewula turnoff is 10km south of Lomahasha border post with Mozambique. From the turn-off the camp is a gentle 30min drive through an undulating rural landscape.
FROM NELSPRUIT/KRUGER PARK TO SHEWULA - From Nelspruit, follow the N4 in an easterly direction towards Komatipoort. At Komatipoort take the R571 towards the Mananga border post. After Mananga follow the MR24. At the traffic circle turn left and head past Tshaneni and Mhlume. After about 45 kms you will reach a T-junction, turn left towards the Lomahasha/Namaacha border post. The Shewula turnoff is 10km south of Lomahasha border post with Mozambique. From the turn-off the camp is a gentle 30min drive through an undulating rural landscape.
FROM MAPUTO TO SHEWULA - follow road signage to Namaacha border post and cross into Swaziland. Approximately 10km after the border turn left on the Shewula road. The camp is well-sign-posted and can be reached after a gentle 30min drive.
